WHAT IS AN ENCODER?
An encoder is an electro-mechanical sensor which measures the speed and position of an operating device. Encoders are used to help maintain speed and position in electromechanical equipment. Our rotary encoders (also known as shaft-encoders) are used in a wide range of industries which require precise monitoring and control of mechanical systems.
Why use magnetic rotary encoders?
Optical encoders use line-of-sight sensing to create signals which are then read by a receiver and converted into digital square wave quadrature output signals. These encoders work well in quiet and clean environments. In situations where line of sight is compromised with dirt and contaminates and where heat can create condensation it can become more difficult to attain accurate reliable data from the sensor.
Magnetic rotary encoders fix this problem by using Hall Effect technology to create sensors that can operate in harsh, dirty operating environments.
Magnetic rotary encoders are:
- Accurate with gaps up to 4mm
- Can be used in dusty, dirty environments
- Heat and humidity resistant
- Shock and vibration resistant
- Compact, low-cost and rugged, without a bulky outer shell
- No moving parts
- Can be customized as a replacement part or customized to fit new designs
